During recent months, the Centre has continued to add to the stock of resources available to public health actors about deliberative processes.

Florence Morestin and François-Pierre Gauvin organized presentations and workshops for diverse Canadian conferences, including:

a webinar offered to a group from a provincial health authority in September 2011;

and a workshop during the 2011 JASP (Journées annuelles de santé publique - Québec's annual public health days), in Montréal on November 30, 2011 - description).

These all featured deliberative processes as part of the Centre's method for synthesizing knowledge about public policies.

Val Morrison worked with François-Pierre to present a workshop focusing on deliberative processes as a means to address wicked problems in public health. This workshop took place during an event among the six National Collaborating Centres for Public Health, in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, in May 2011. Description.

François-Pierre also continued his collaboration with Christopher McDougall in a series of presentations and workshops on the use of deliberative processes to help to clarify social and ethical dilemmas (for example, on June 20 2011 at the Canadian Public Health Association's annual conference in Montréal - description; and on June 29th, 2011 in Halifax, during the annual conference of the Canadian Institute for Public Health Inspectors - CIPHI).

Finally, besides contributing to the Centre's publications, including two recent documents on citizen participation in health impact assessment (published in December 2011 - description), François-Pierre has also contributed to the scientific literature on deliberation with colleagues from outside of the NCCHPP. These include:

O'Doherty, Kieran, Francois-Pierre Gauvin, Colleen Grogan, and Will Friedman. “Implementing a Public Deliberative Forum”, The Hastings Center Report (In press).

Abelson, Julia, François-Pierre Gauvin, and Élisabeth Martin. “Mettre en pratique la théorie de la délibération publique: études de cas du secteur de la santé en Ontario et au Québec”, Télescope, 2011, 17(1) : 135-155. (Read the paper, on the site of the Ecole Nationale d'administration publique, In French.)

Gauvin, François-Pierre. “Involving the public to facilitate or trigger governance action contributing to health in all policies”, in Matthias WISMAR et al. (ed). Inter-sectoral governance for health in all policies, Brussels: European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies & IUHPE (In press).

In recent months, the NCCHPP adopted an innovative approach by looking at how deliberative tools and frameworks could be useful and relevant for addressing ethical issues in public health.
