The determining role of public policies on population health has been well-known for several years. Since 1986, the Ottawa Charter has underscored the importance of this type of government action in public health. However, public health actors rarely receive training in this domain. One of the Centre's projects is to develop tools toward this end.

Whatever the role of ideas, context, actors, dominant discourses, or the legislative step in which they are situated, several factors influence public policy development.
Different models and approaches have been developed in order to simplify and explain the processes by which public policies are developed and adopted.
The NCCHPP seeks to make resources and tools from political science, policy analysis, sociology and other social sciences available to public health actors in order to apply them to Canada's public health realities.
