The structure of public health in Canada is complex. The federal government, the ten provinces and three territories are all structured differently. This resource, designed in the form of a table, shows the reader how public health is organized within each of these jurisdictions.
The most recent update of the Structural Profile of Public Health in Canada occurred in 2018.
Methodology
In an effort to clarify the different public health structures across the country, federal, provincial and territorial government websites and official publications were surveyed to identify where public health responsibilities reside in each jurisdiction. Websites and publications from other relevant organizations were also consulted. Online data collection for the revision of the Structural Profile was conducted between March - September 2018. This information was then reviewed and verified by key provincial or territorial stakeholders between September - November 2018. The section on structures of public health operations devoted to Indigenous peoples is presently under revision.
