Public health planning and delivery systems vary across Canada. In an effort to identify and to clarify the different structures across the country, the NCCHPP has surveyed provincial and territorial government websites to identify where public health responsibilities reside in each jurisdiction
Using the 5 essential public health functions put forward by the Federal/Provincial/ Territorial Public Health Working Group of the Advisory Committee on Population Health, we have categorized the information on public health responsibilities for each province and territory.
The NCCHPP first collected data in 2006. This information was updated and validated by key informants in each province and territory in 2007 and then again in 2009-2010. More recently, we significantly revised and expanded the section on Aboriginal health, in 2011. These latter additions were largely inspired by a publication (PDF, 1.08 MB) on the site of the National Collaborating Centre for Aboriginal Health. We invite you to check the revised section on Aboriginal health in the Structural Profile.
Since organizational structures in government are subject to change, we invite you to help us to keep this tool up to date by letting us know of any changes affecting the accuracy of the information contained in this table. We will be revising and updating the Structural Profile again during the Summer of 2012 with changes to be published in Fall 2012.
