Health Impact Assessment (HIA) - Inventory of Resources |
|
If you have a general interest in learning more about health impact assessment, or if you are a professional working in the field who needs ready access to a global field of resources, this inventory will provide numerous valuable links.
Released in May 2009, this online tool introduces health impact assessment practices with emphasis on their application to policy development.
Resources include tools for bibliographic research, examples of completed HIAs, links to training and other resources, a range of topic areas developed in HIA, and more. |

The National Collaborating Centres for Public Health are hosting the fourth annual Summer Institute, from July 7-9, 2009 in Mont-Sainte-Anne, Quebec.
This bilingual event will focus on Collaboration, Networking and Evaluation and will feature a line-up of speakers including André Picard, Roz Lasker, Marleen Bekker, Dr Luc Boileau, Brint Milward and more. To consult the final program or to register, click here.

Economic Evaluation
In collaboration with Laurie Goldsmith, author of Economic Evaluation Across the Four Faces of Prevention: a Canadian Perspective, the NCCHPP is bringing together public health actors in a series of workshops to discuss how economic evaluations can help support the promotion of healthy public policies.
Two workshops have been held in Edmonton and in Montréal. The goal is to update the original paper by Goldsmith et al, and to enable the author to link directly with the public health community to discuss issues for further work in economic evaluation. The Use of Incentives in the Promotion of Healthy Behaviours: The Case of Unhealthy Food
Economic incentives are frequently employed as a means to implement public policy.Tax breaks or tax credits are common examples among many kinds of incentives. |

In this paper, Xavier Landes examines some ethical issues raised by the use of financial incentives to promote healthy eating habits. The author examines individual well-being and social welfare as the means to justify the promotion of healthy living habits. He then identifies four types of incentives, based on their nature (negative or positive) and their target (supply or demand), and assesses the related ethical issues.
The essays developed for our ethics project present summary discussions of some contemporary ethical issues as they relate to various aspects of public policy and their impact on health. The goal is to encourage reflection on these issues among public health actors. |
