Knowledge to Action: Engage, Enable, Inspire

The NCCHPP at the National Community Health Nurses of Canada Conference, June 2010.

The NCCHPP participated in the annual National Community Health Nurses of Canada conference, held in Toronto from June 16 to 18, 2010. This was an opportunity for us to engage with community health nurses and to learn more about this specific group of public health actors.

Acting on Healthy Public Policy: Tapping into the Expertise, Points of View and Needs of Community Health Nurses

On Friday June 18, from 10:15 to 11:15, François Benoit, the NCCHPP lead, hosted a round table discussion. The objective for this session was to solicit the views of community health nurses and explore how the NCCHPP could best support them in their efforts to promote healthy public policies.

Public Health Ethics: An Introduction and Interactive Discussion of Cases

Also on June 18, Christopher McDougall, research officer for the NCCHPP, hosted a networking Café. This session was an opportunity to explore public health ethics, specifically in the context of community health nurses' professional activities.

The session began with a short introduction to the field and then turned to the historical development and philosophical underpinnings of public health ethics, some proposed frameworks for linking moral theory with public health practice, and the opportunities for intersectoral and interdisciplinary action that are created by such a connection.

The presentation was followed by a facilitated discussion of a sample of case studies that can be used to help identify, analyze and articulate well-reasoned responses to ethical issues arising in community health nursing practice.
